Planning the old calendar….

Well I am the type of person that has to have something to work towards.  This is extreamly true when it comes to Triathlons and Running in general. 

Well I have a calendar hanging at my desk with races scribbled on various dates.  Some dates have multipule races listed.  On those dates I might have to make a decision on which race to run.  What a good problem to have….

You more or less have to have your goals in mind when laying out your calendar.  This is a problem for me.  I have a decent idea about my goals but I haven’t set them in stone yet.  I more or less am tring to decide between focusing on running or triathlons….That seems very simlar but it means a lot different train and what I spend my time on training…

 So here is a list of upcoming events over the next 2 and 1/2 months that I am considering.

8-13 Running

Well it was a outstanding day outside here in Boise I decided to head outside for a run…..Not mention when I got my locker at the gym I forgot to change over my glasses and I still had on my sunglasses. 

 I decided to run the y-2-camelback run.  This run is up 13th street in Boise through Hyde Park.  Once at Camelback park I turn and head over to 8th street and head back to the Y. 

I simply love this run.  It is very relaxing to run through this area of town.  I would give up a lot to live in this section of town.  I would totally love to have the ablity to ride my bike to work and live very close to downtown Boise. 

 Well I went through the first mile with decent success.  I had a little soreness in my right shoulder but I walked it off through the park.  Once on 8th street I ran most of the way back in with walking on 3 blocks.  I would say I ran 1.8 miles total.  So I figure 25 minutes is a little slow but with the walk it probably worked out ok. 

 Well with no decided on race for my next up I will have to figure out what comes next.

I think I will investigate short term goals tomorrow.

You would think…

that I would either stick with this or just quit completely….  There is some certain value to this though in reguards to helping me focus.  I feel obligated to reach certain goals which I have writen about.  Well with this being said I have decided to let this blog become a little more specific to hopefully keep my attention.  I have decided to basically turn this into my training blog.  I will be training for various endurance events in the year which I have started to layout for my self and I would like to record my progress along with my education form my training here.   Well lets give it one more shot…

Training towards Tri

So I decided to train towards the tri for next week.  I really want to do that race over the other one I am just not sure that it is the smartest thing to do. 

Yesterday I went out for a long run and felt fine except for the last 1/4 of a mile I bonked a little.  The run created tons of confidence for me.  I left the gym really sore but feeling really good with lots of confidence towards next weeks triathlon.  Then this morning I got up at 5:30 and head to the pool for a swim.  The swim as I have said in the past is my worst event.  After I turned on my second 50 yard swim with 10 sec rest I started questioning my swim for this race.  I Know that I can finish the swim but it is a matter of how much resting I attempt to take without getting totally embarassed. 

Does that sound crazy…I am sure who ever is stuck with counting my laps will just go crazy waiting on me to finish.

Well I have a big bike ride planned for this weekend along with my longest run yet planned.  Then next week it is tapper time with just enough to keep the wheels greased. 

I have set a deadline of Tuesday for to make up my mind.  I want to get both workouts in this weekend before I make up my mind.

What Race to Run

Well this week is a big week in training.  I am still trying to decide if I am ready for a full length sprint distance for a triathlon.  On the 6th/7th there is a triathlon put on by the local YMCA (my gym).  The distances are 750 Yard swim, 12.5 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run/crawl.  You swim on the 6th and bike and run on the 7th.  The issue here is there also happens to be a little 5K run that same morning of the 7th. 

I need to decide which one I am going to do.   I really have no attachment to the 5k run.  The proceeds go to a local high-school athletic booster club.  I am simply attracted to it because it seems more manageable then a full sprint.    The pro’s to running the tri is simply the pure bliss of finishing a tri. 

So lets break down the tri into the three area’s and what they mean to me and my training.  The swim-  Well I know right now that if I do this tri my swim will be very slow and require a few rests.   Now my attitude towards the swim is just to survive since it will be an entire day ahead of the other two events.

The bike-  So this is a considerably longer distance then what I have been doing.  Granted I have been doing this distance about once a week.  Well the bike is not my difficulty I just simply get it done.

The run- I am not overly intimidated by the 5k it’s self but I am a little scared of it after the bike of that distance.  I fore see myself walk at least a 1/4 of the run.  Almost all of my training has been inside on the treadmill and the is race will be on a paved road.  (both races will be on pavement.)

Well I will pay extra if I miss the deadline today but I am ok with paying an extra $5 for either of them to make up my mind later this weekend after this weeks training.

Alright I have been training again for the tri, hence the lack of blogging. 

 Well today I did the SimplyStu Worldwide Tri  at my local YMCA where I train.  Man let me tell you how damn good it feels to finish a race. 

So I jumped in the pool about noon and swam decently hard but I held back a little since I was concerned about the next two stages.  I was a little over the half way point on the swim when a 92 year old lady asked if she could share the lane.  She was really cool.  Well I finished the half mile swim in 18 minutes and jumped out of the pool and hustled upstairs to the locker room. 

I went through my make shift transition in about 4 minutes which is long but yet I did have to sort through the locker room and then head to the cardio room since I was riding the stationary bike and treadmill.

 I jumped on the bike and started to cruise.  I only had 5 miles to go but it felt great.  I did have a few moments that hurt during mile 2.  After I hit the half way point I just cruised to the finish.  Once I hit the mile 3 point I hit the Hammer gel and that hit me with some more power.  I really pushed hard at the end. 

Once off the bike I hit the water really hard and then talked one of the girls working at the Y into taking my photo while on the treadmill.  I was about 30 seconds into the run when I thought my right calf was going to explode.  I jumped off and stretched and from there it felt great.  This might have been the strongest run I have had this year.  I put down the run in 18 minutes for 2 miles.  (Yeah I know a little short but I have a 5k tomorrow). 

 Let me tell you how cool it flet to finish.  I wanted to throw my arms in the air when I was done but since I was in the gym I didn’t…….
